Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common TCL TV remote control questions.

Connection and Setup

Do my phone and TCL TV need to be on the same Wi-Fi?
Yes. The app controls your TCL TV over your local network, so both devices must be on the same Wi-Fi. If you have separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands or a guest network, connect both to the same one.
Does the TV show a pairing code?
It depends on what's inside your TCL. Roku TV models connect without any code. Google TV and Android TV models show a 6-digit code the first time you connect. Fire TV Edition sets show a 4-digit code. Type the code into the app and you're paired.
The TV refuses the connection (Roku TV models).
On a TCL Roku TV, open Settings → System → Advanced system settings → External control → Control by mobile apps and set it to Enabled (Default), then try connecting again.

Compatibility

Which TCL TVs are supported?
TCL Roku TV, TCL Google TV and Android TV models, and TCL Fire TV Edition sets — all controlled over Wi-Fi. Older TCL TVs without a smart platform respond only to infrared and can't be controlled from a phone.
Do I still need the physical TCL remote?
For everyday navigation, no — the D-pad, OK, volume and channel keys work free over Wi-Fi, so you don't need to point your phone at the TV. Premium adds Power, Home, Back, Mute and playback so the app fully replaces the remote.

App Features

How do I type instead of picking letters one by one?
Open a search or text field on the TV, then tap the keyboard icon in the app and type. It's much faster than the on-screen keyboard.
Voice search isn't working.
Voice search works on TCL Google TV and Android TV models — allow microphone access for the app and speak after the prompt. TCL Roku TV models don't accept voice commands from third-party apps; use the fast keyboard search instead.
The app is slow to respond or keeps disconnecting.
Keep your phone and TV on the same Wi-Fi and near the router. If it lags after you switch apps, reopen the app to reconnect. Rebooting the TV and your router usually clears persistent delays.

Free vs Premium

What features are free in Remote for TCL TV?
Finding and connecting to your TV, the D-pad with OK, volume and channel keys, the number pad and the trackpad surface are free with no time limit and no account. That covers everyday navigation on a lost or broken TCL remote.
What does Premium add?
Premium unlocks the rest of the remote: Power, Home, Back and Mute, the playback row, voice search on Google TV and Android TV models, typing with your phone keyboard, and one-tap shortcuts to your streaming apps. It is an auto-renewing subscription (weekly or monthly) or a one-time lifetime purchase; manage or cancel it in your App Store or Google Play account settings.
How do I restore my Premium purchase on a new phone?
Open Remote for TCL TV, go to Settings, and tap Restore Purchases. On iPhone it restores through your Apple Account and on Android through your Google account — no separate login needed.
